Bear Reading Recommendations
There’s no secret that we love bears. We love seeing bears, we love photographing/filming bears, and we love reading about bears. Here are a few of our favorite bear books that you might enjoy as well.
Beauty Within the Beast, Stephen Stringham
Beauty Within the Beast is a fun but informative story of a biologist’s time raising and releasing black bear cubs in Alaska. There are numerous comical and touching stories that help give a great look into the lives and behaviors of black bears.
The Grizzly in the Driveway, Robert Chaney
The Grizzly in the Driveway paints an extensive, unbiased picture of grizzly recovery in the continental United States. It covers everything from historical grizzly stories and facts to government policy showing exactly how complex and difficult grizzly recovery really is.
The Blue Bear, Lynn Schooler
The Blue Bear follows Lynn Schooler as he searches for the legendary blue bear. Schooler travels all over Alaska on his boat, often accompanied by world famous photographer Michio Hoshino. Schooler’s search for the Blue Bear is full of adventures and becomes as much about self exploration as finding the bear.
Grizzly Years, Doug Peacock
Grizzly Years is the story of how grizzly bears saved a life. Peacock writes of his time in Vietnam, his struggles as he returned home, and how spending time with and filming the wild grizzlies of the Rocky Mountains saved his life.
Grizzly Heart, Charlie Russell
Grizzly Heart is by far our favorite bear book. Russell writes from a lifetime of experience working with and filming bears all over the world. Grizzly Heart follows his journey as he travels to the far remote reaches of Russia to learn about wild, undisturbed bears. By chance he ends up rescuing and raising grizzly cubs in Russia. The stories and insight into bear behavior and the bear human relationship are heartwarming and memorable. This book should be at the top of any bear lover’s list
